Seanadóir Eileen Flynn talks to Indigenous Ireland

In May 2023 Irish Traveller woman and Senator Eileen Flynn opened the Indigenous Ireland 'Daingean' Gathering in Co. Donegal, we catch up with her again since her recent re-election

One among a number of Irish delegates who joined international visitors from indigenous nations in Aotearoa - New Zealand and Turtle Island - North America at Daingean, Eileen has always supported the multi-layered and colourful discussion around being indigenous on the island of Ireland and what exactly that means. Speaking from the perspective of the Irish Travelling community, Eileen is a unique champion, blazing a trail as a young woman, activist and political representative, a trail marked by her forebearers and ‘fellow travellers’. Always on the side of marginalised voices in society, reaching out to express solidarity and support for the victims of discrimination at home and abroad, Eileen is no shrinking violet. She is a fighter. Is it too hopeful to believe that Eileen and her like will help liberate the people of Ireland from the colonised mentality that continues mendaciously to persecute her People?
